In my earlier days as an administrator, I did so much and barely created the time for self reflection. You see, running a school is no small feat. From ensuring academic excellence to managing staff and budgets, the list of responsibilities is almost endless. Yet, a lot can go wrong when we do not create the time to self refelct on our practice. To help you navigate this complex role, here are 15 crucial questions you should regularly ask yourself. These questions will not only help you stay on track but also improve the overall effectiveness of your school.
So, grab a cup of coffee, get comfortable, and let’s start now!
1. Are We Aligned with Our Vision and Mission?
Your school's vision and mission statements are more than just words on paper. They should guide every decision you make. Ask yourself: Are we staying true to our core values and long-term goals? If not, what changes do we need to implement?
2. How Are Our Students Performing Academically?
This is a fundamental question. Regularly review academic performance data to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Are there specific subjects or grade levels that need more attention? How can you support teachers to help students succeed?
3. Are We Meeting the Needs of All Students?
Every student is unique, and it’s essential to cater to diverse learning needs. Reflect on whether your school is inclusive and accommodating for students with special needs, gifted students, and those who may require additional support. What programs or resources can we introduce to better serve all students?
4. How Effective Are Our Teachers?
I am sure we all know that great teachers are the backbone of any successful school. So, you need to regularly evaluate teaching methods and provide professional development opportunities. Are our teachers motivated and equipped to deliver high-quality education? How can we support them in their professional growth?

Financial stability is crucial for the smooth operation of your school. Regularly review your budget and financial plans. Are we using our resources wisely? Do we have a financial cushion for unexpected expenses? How can we increase our revenue or reduce costs? Have all the parents paid their children's school fees? If they have not, does it mean our fee collection strategies are not effective? How can we improve on this?

Conflict is inevitable, but it’s how we handle it that matters. Ensure you have effective conflict resolution strategies in place. Are we addressing issues promptly and fairly? How can we improve our approach to managing conflicts?

Education regulations and policies are constantly evolving. Make sure your school is compliant with all state, and federal regulations. Are we up-to-date with the latest requirements?
