Starting out as a school administrator can feel really uncertain, and I say that from expereince. You’re excited, probably a little nervous, and definitely eager to make a positive impact.
If you’re reading this, I believe that you're a new school administrator or aspiring to become one, and you’re about to embark on a journey that is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
To help you navigate this path, here are eight essential tips that I recommend which can set you up for success.
1. Build Strong Relationships
Relationships are the backbone of any successful school. As an administrator, your ability to connect with teachers, students, parents, and support staff is absolutely important.
Get to Know Your Team
Spend time getting to know your teachers and staff. Understand their strengths, challenges, and what motivates them. Building strong relationships creates a supportive and collaborative work environment.
Listen Actively: Make time for regular check-ins and listen to their concerns, suggestions, and feedback.
Be Approachable: Maintain an open-door policy to encourage open communication and trust. I said this in an earlier post this month, and this is for emphasis.
Engage with Students
Show students that you care about their success and well-being. Being visible and approachable can make a significant difference in how students perceive you and the school.
Be Present: Walk around the school, attend events, and visit classrooms regularly.
Show Interest: Take the time to learn students’ names and listen to their experiences and concerns.
2. Communicate Effectively
Clear and effective communication is key to running a successful school. It ensures that everyone is on the same page and working towards common goals.
Set Clear Expectations
Ensure that all members of your school community understand their roles, responsibilities, and the school’s goals.
Regular Meetings: Hold regular staff meetings to discuss updates, expectations, and any concerns.
Transparent Policies: Make sure school policies are clearly communicated and easily accessible.
Use Multiple Channels
Different people prefer different communication methods. Use a variety of channels to reach everyone effectively.

Networking: Join professional organizations and attend conferences to network with other educators and administrators.
Continuous Learning: Take courses or attend workshops to enhance your skills and knowledge.
