If you have been following my work, you’d know that I have written and published two books, Dear Educator and The School Administrators Companion.
Well, I have news for you.
I wrote Effective Boarding House Administration before my second published book.
Surprised?
Yes! I spent the whole of the coronavirus pandemic lockdown writing and journaling.
So, this new book has been a work in progress since late 2019. I juggled between writing three books. I’ll announce the fourth one next year, hopefully.
Why did I choose to write a book on boarding house administration?
I noticed a huge gap in the practices in our boarding houses in our schools. Because I run a Facebook group with lots of school administrators and school owners in it, it’s easy for me to hear firsthand what really goes on in quite a lot of schools. And it’s not a pretty story.
So, this book
Effective Boarding House Administration addresses the issues we have in our boarding houses by providing useful knowledge and arming you with what you need to run a boarding house successfully and effectively.
It covers everything from why parents send their children to boarding houses, to policies and procedures you need to put in place for a boarding house, to the kind of staff you need and what their duties are. The records you need to keep in a boarding house are also covered.
And lots more!
You know having worked as a school administrator in four schools three of which operated boarding houses, I share with you practical knowledge and experience to help you fix your boarding house right.
Who is the book for?
This book is for school owners, school administrators and managers, boarding house staff and every teacher who works in a boarding house. It is also for parents and everyone who intends to see order and professionalism in our boarding houses.
How can you get involved?
This is a campaign for order in our boarding houses and we mustn’t leave things to chance.
It’s not until another school is in the news for a scandal that you should be prompted to fix things right in your boarding house. Do it now!
Here is how you can get involved:
a. Share this post with your contacts or people who work in boarding houses.
b. Tag people who work in boarding houses on this post
c. Order copies of the book Effective Boarding House Administration for yourself.
d. Buy copies of it to donate to boarding houses.
e. Request for a training session with your boarding house team. My organisation Pezu Smith Consulting offers training for boarding house teams
Please have a peep into the Introduction page of the book:
INTRODUCTION
Why did I decide to write this book in the first place?
The answer is very simple- to provide awareness and a guide for managing the boarding houses of schools in Nigeria particularly and in schools around West Africa.
While interacting with a lot of school proprietors and school administrators or leaders, I have discovered a great need to improve the operations of boarding houses. I have also come across boarding house staff who seemed to have no clue as to how a boarding house is operated which made me very concerned.
So, I wrote this book out of a sincere heart to help, to provide value to you.
I intend that the information you gain from reading this book will be applied effectively in the operation of boarding houses in Nigeria and West Africa.
Why am I qualified to write this book? I’m sure that is the question running through your mind right now.
Well, if it is, good question!
I write from my experience!
Having served as a school administrator in four reputable schools since 2005 (and three of these schools had a boarding house), I have gathered enough knowledge, experience, and skills to share with others who are involved with schools that have a boarding house. Before I rose to the top managerial cadre in school management, I’d worked as a teacher in two schools where I was required to supervise the boarding students.
So, I am not just sharing textbook knowledge! It is lots of experiential knowledge simply put in a book for you.
Yes!
A lot of the things I have shared here are things that I have practised over the past fourteen years as a school administrator in four reputable schools across the geographical zones in Nigeria, specifically Kano, Calabar, Abuja and Lagos.
As has become my style, this book Effective Boarding House Administration is written in plain everyday English, and it does not have to be read chapter sequentially. I enjoy writing in a leisurely and relaxed manner. It makes reading my books so easy! It’s intentional; so even if you do not enjoy reading (and there are people like that, so don’t beat yourself up), you’ll somewhat find it difficult to put down any of my books once you have picked it up to read.
Please ensure everyone on your boarding house team has a copy of this book. It’s an indispensable book in boarding house administration and management in our climes. You’ll certainly find enough to help you change or improve on the way you have been doing things in your school’s boarding house. Let this book bring about a revolution in boarding house management in our climes!
This book is for all:
§ school owners
§ school administrators
§ principals
§ all school management team members- Principals, Vice Principals, Heads of Departments,
§ boarding house staff (matrons, housemasters, boarding house marshals)
§ house parents (or whatever title you have as a staff in a boarding house)
§ parents who want the best for their children in the boarding house.
My sincere desire is to see boarding houses in our schools operate in a very professionally acceptable manner.
I am sure I can trust you to join me in this advocacy.
