These Four Mistakes May Be Ruining Your School

NANCY EKPEZU

As a seasoned school administrator, I know it can be challenging to balance the demands of running a school with ensuring that your students are receiving a high-quality education. Unfortunately, you can make some mistakes that can negatively impact your school's reputation, growth, and effectiveness.

Here are four common mistakes that you should avoid:

1. Lack of Vision and Structure with Policies and Processes:

A school needs a clear vision and well-defined policies and processes to be successful. When you lack these things, it can lead to confusion, inconsistency, and poor decision-making. Make sure that everyone on staff understands and is aligned with the school's mission and goals.

Develop clear policies and procedures for everything from discipline to emergency preparedness and student supervision. You must have read the tragic story recently about a school that lost a student at an event. Perhaps with emergency preparedness, this could have been prevented even though the full details are not clear to the public about what really happened.

2. Poor Staffing and Staff Retention:

Staffing is one of the most critical factors in the success of any school. Hiring unqualified or disengaged teachers can have a significant negative impact on your students' academic performance and overall school morale and reputation. Also, staff turnover can be costly and disrupt the learning environment.

Invest in your teachers, provide training and development opportunities, and create a positive work culture that encourages loyalty and engagement. We know this could be tough considering how teachers hop from one school to another for the flimsiest reasons. But then, there are still schools that have been able to retain their staff for over ten to fifteen years and I have had the privilege of working in one of such schools.

3. Failure to Adapt to Change:

Education as we know it, is constantly evolving, and schools must adapt to stay relevant. This includes embracing new technology, teaching methods, and pedagogies. If you fail to do so, you can make your school seem outdated and irrelevant, resulting in decreased enrollment and student retention.

4. Poor Customer Service:

Parents and students are your customers, and they expect to be treated with respect and professionalism. Poor customer service can quickly erode trust and lead to negative word-of-mouth, impacting your school's reputation and bottom line.
