Today, I want to talk to us about fear - the fear that holds us back from doing the things we want to do. As an introvert, I understand how fear can be paralysing, but I also know that it's possible to overcome it. And I say this from my personal experience.
One of my biggest fears while growing up was public speaking. I would avoid any opportunity that required me to speak in front of a group of people. Meanwhile, I was utterly brilliant with great ideas and had so much to say! But I’d rather keep quiet than talk. However, I knew that if I wanted to achieve my goals, I had to face my fear. So, I started practising by speaking to smaller groups of people and gradually worked my way up. Today, I have spoken at TEDx and many conferences and summits. I have also been a guest on TV and radio shows where I was interviewed and I do this effortlessly now. In fact, I look forward to being on TV and radio these days and I am always honoured and delighted wherever I am invited to share my views on issues around administration, management or personal development. It started with recognising the fear and facing it.
Another fear I had was making friends. As an introvert, I preferred to keep to myself, but I knew that connecting with people was important for personal and professional growth. So, I started attending networking events and joined online communities. It wasn't easy, but I made some great connections and even formed lasting friendships.
I was also afraid of riding horses! I recall getting close to a horse a few years ago to take a picture while I was on vacation at a country in Africa. That was the closest I did get. But check me out on this picture on a horse! I actually rode a horse recently while on a picnic at Baracuda Beach in Lagos. I simply dared and I did it.
Lastly, I was afraid to venture out on social media. I didn't know how to use it or what to share. But I knew that social media was essential for building my personal brand and reaching a larger audience. So, I started learning about it and experimenting with different platforms. Today, I've become known for my personal brand by using social media and have even been interviewed on TV and radio many times.
I have shared my experiences to let you know that it's possible to overcome fear. It may not be easy, but it's worth it. Imagine all the things you could lose or miss if you allow fear to hold you back. It gets easier once you break the inertia and step out.
If you're struggling with fear, here are some things you can do to overcome it:
- Identify the fear and acknowledge it.
- Take small steps towards facing your fear.
- Seek support from friends, family, or a personal coach like me. I am a cetified life coach.
- Visualise yourself succeeding and focus on the positive outcome.
Remember, everything we need is on the other side of fear. So, don't let fear hold you back from doing the things you want to do. Step out of your comfort zone, silence the negative voices in your mind, and take action towards your goals.
