EMBRACE EQUITY: HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!
Happy International Women's Day to all the wonderful women out there! Today is a day to celebrate women's achievements and to reflect on the progress we have made towards gender equality. This year's theme is DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality, and the motto is #EmbraceEquity, which is a call to action for us to embrace technology, equality and inclusion at our workplaces and businesses.
I certainly empathise with the experiences of women in the workforce. We have come a long way in terms of gender equality, but there is still a long way to go. Women face unique challenges in the workplace, such as unconscious bias, unequal pay, discrimination, and a lack of representation in leadership positions and in politics. But, we are strong, we are resilient, and we can rise above these challenges. Yes, we can!
One way that we can embrace equity is by embracing technology. Technology is an incredibly powerful tool that can help us break down barriers and create more equitable workplaces. For example, remote work and video conferencing technologies have made it possible for women to participate in meetings and events from anywhere in the world. This has made it easier for women with caregiving responsibilities to balance work and family life. I urge you to overcome your technophobia as we celebrate you today. You can do it if I could! My company, Pezu Smith Consulting, is largely tech driven.
Another way that we can embrace equity is by advocating for ourselves and for other women. It's important to speak up when we see inequality and to support other women in their professional and business endeavours. We can mentor other women, share our experiences, and help each other navigate the challenges of the workplace.
Finally, we can embrace equity by creating inclusive workplaces and businesses. This means fostering a culture of respect, diversity, and belonging. We can do this by promoting diversity in our hiring practices, providing training on unconscious bias, and creating opportunities for all employees to grow and develop. We shouldn't think women in tech are any less than men in tech. We are not competing with the men. We are simply being awesome in our own spaces and making our contributions to development.
To all the women out there, I urge you to embrace equity and to be the best version of yourself. Whether you're a colleague, a business associate, a friend, or a family member, know that you are capable of achieving great things.
Happy International Women's Day!
